What is an ATR Calculator?
Average True Range (ATR) measures how much a market typically moves over a chosen number of bars. For each bar, true range is the greatest of the high-to-low distance, the gap from the previous close to the high, and the gap from the previous close to the low.
Wilder's method, the original ATR, starts with a simple average and then smooths each new bar. The simple method averages only the latest true ranges. A larger ATR means wider swings. ATR does not say which way price will go.
This calculator loads recent bars for the instrument you pick, computes ATR, and places a take profit and a stop loss a chosen multiple of that ATR away from the latest close.
How to use the ATR Calculator
Pick a market, choose how the range is measured, and set how many times ATR you want between price and your exit levels.
ATR levels
Step-by-Step
1. Choose the instrument and timeframe
Select the symbol and the bar size you trade, such as daily or 1 hour. The calculator uses recent price history for that symbol.
2. Set the period, method, and side
The usual ATR period is 14. Wilder is the standard smoothing. Simple averages the latest true ranges only. Long places the stop below price and the take profit above it. Short does the opposite.
3. Set the multiples and calculate
A stop at 1× ATR sits one average range away from the current price. A take profit at 2× ATR sits twice that far. The result shows both prices, the distance in ticks, and the reward-to-risk ratio.
